The Women in Medicine Fellowship has received strong backing from government, with Deputy Minister for Health Grace Ayensu-Danquah welcoming the initiative as a timely intervention to strengthen leadership and promote gender equality in Ghana’s healthcare sector. She made the remarks at the All-Cohort Meeting 2026 held in Accra, where stakeholders gathered to discuss leadership development in global health.

The programme, formally known as the Women in Medicine (WIM) Global Leadership Fellowship, is designed to equip early- and mid-career female health professionals with the skills needed to take on leadership roles and drive systemic improvements in healthcare delivery.

Fellowship Targets Leadership and Skills Development

Addressing participants, Prof. Ayensu-Danquah emphasised that the Women in Medicine Fellowship presents a valuable opportunity for women in healthcare to build critical competencies. She noted that the programme’s structure is aligned with Ghana’s broader commitment to strengthening its health workforce while ensuring inclusivity.

“The fellowship presents a valuable opportunity for emerging women professionals in healthcare to acquire critical leadership, communication, and research skills,” she stated.

According to her, the initiative will play a key role in preparing women to take up decision-making positions and contribute meaningfully to healthcare reforms. The fellowship’s curriculum focuses on leadership development, project implementation, resource management, and evidence-based decision-making; areas considered essential for improving service delivery in modern health systems. Globally, similar programmes have been used to address gender gaps in healthcare leadership by providing mentorship, training, and professional networks for women.

Programme Designed for Global Impact

The Women in Medicine Fellowship is a nine-month, part-time programme tailored for healthcare professionals in low- and middle-income countries who aspire to lead and promote gender equality.

Participants are trained while continuing their professional roles, allowing them to apply newly acquired skills directly within their work environments. The programme also includes mentorship, practical leadership training, and collaborative learning opportunities aimed at building a strong network of women leaders across different countries.

Experts say such initiatives are crucial in addressing structural barriers that often limit women’s advancement in the health sector, particularly in developing regions. By focusing on leadership and capacity building, the fellowship seeks to create long-term improvements in healthcare systems through empowered professionals.

Government Encourages Participation

Prof. Ayensu-Danquah encouraged eligible Ghanaian health professionals to take advantage of the opportunity, noting that the programme aligns with national priorities in healthcare development. She stressed that strengthening leadership among women is essential to achieving a more inclusive and effective healthcare system.

Her remarks reflect growing recognition of the role women play in healthcare delivery, as well as the need to support their progression into leadership roles. The initiative also supports Ghana’s broader agenda of improving healthcare outcomes through skilled personnel, innovation, and inclusive policies.

Broader Implications for Ghana’s Gealth Sector

The introduction of the Women in Medicine Fellowship highlights a shift toward investing in human capital within the health sector, particularly among underrepresented groups.

Analysts note that empowering women in leadership positions can lead to more inclusive decision-making, improved patient outcomes, and stronger healthcare systems overall. The fellowship is also expected to contribute to global health efforts by building a network of professionals capable of addressing complex challenges across different regions.

Outlook for Women in Healthcare Leadership

The endorsement of the Women in Medicine Fellowship by government signals a growing commitment to gender equality and leadership development in Ghana’s healthcare sector. As more Ghanaian professionals participate in such initiatives, the impact is expected to extend beyond individual careers to influence policy, service delivery, and health outcomes nationwide.

If sustained, programmes like this could play a critical role in shaping the next generation of healthcare leaders, ensuring that the sector is not only well-resourced but also inclusive and forward-looking.
