The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) is prepared to launch a new technology-driven initiative aimed at completely modernizing Ghana’s agricultural sector. This strategic intervention is set for an official roll-out on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, and aligns with the broader developmental vision established by President John Dramani Mahama.

According to the Sector Minister, Hon. Eric Opoku, the agrarian agenda focuses on enhancing agricultural technology across rural and commercial farming zones, integrating modern automated tools into the domestic food production ecosystem to establish robust national food security, foster extensive job creation, and significantly elevate local farm yields nationwide.

“The cornerstone of this agricultural investment involves the distribution of 40,000 bags of fertilizers, specifically targeting peasant farmers who form the backbone of the agricultural community in Ghana. This distribution is augmented by the introduction of advanced agricultural drones”

For Hon. Opoku, this highly anticipated deployment is a critical step forward in how Ghana manages its agricultural sector, shifting from traditional manual practices toward systems to address long-standing challenges in crop management and soil nutrition, ensuring that state resources are funneled directly into the communities that need them most.

Establishing this technological and resource-backed framework is expected to build a resilient infrastructure capable of protecting the nation’s food systems against unpredictable environmental and economic variables.

Historically, resource constraints and high input costs have limited the productivity of these smallholder food producers, making government intervention critical for nationwide yield enhancement, setting the stage for a highly successful and prosperous farming season.

Augmented by the introduction of highly advanced agricultural drones – unmanned aerial vehicles for the automated aerial application of essential farming inputs such as pesticides, herbicides, seeds, and fertilizers – this massive distribution is providing a comprehensive technological wrapper to traditional farming methods.

Hon. Opoku noted that the integration represents a major operational upgrade in how inputs are spread across diverse crop fields, ensuring uniform coverage and eliminating the operational inefficiencies that typically plague manual field broadcasting.

Operational Mechanics

Arguing for precision farming in Ghana, the Minister explained that these aerial platforms introduce unprecedented field management capabilities, promising to substantially reduce overall chemical usage while simultaneously minimizing physical crop damage during the application process.

Unlike traditional manual spraying, which often leads to over-application or uneven distribution of volatile chemicals, compromising plant health and increasing operational costs for smallholders, drones ensure that chemical applications are targeted only where necessary, preserving the surrounding environment and maximizing the efficacy of every input used.

Furthermore, the operational speed and capacity of these advanced drones represent a massive leap forward in rural administrative efficiency, as the technology is built to seamlessly cover large, complex, and highly inaccessible terrains that have historically proven difficult or impossible to manage through conventional manual labor.

With the capacity to efficiently treat 50 to 100 acres per hour, Hon. Opoku emphasized that these drones can manage massive expanses of farmland in a fraction of the time required by traditional methods.

This rapid coverage capability means that pest outbreaks or nutrient deficiencies can be addressed almost immediately across entire farming communities, preventing widespread crop failure and securing the collective yield of vulnerable farming enclaves.

Beyond the immediate improvements in crop yields and operational speed, the adoption of automated drone technology carries profound health and safety benefits for the domestic agricultural workforce, most notably debilitating “farmer-related skin diseases” and respiratory complications caused by direct contact with concentrated pesticides and herbicides.

MoFA’s goal is to de-risk the agricultural profession and solve a major public health concern within agrarian communities by shifting the burden of chemical application from human laborers to automated aerial platforms, ensuring that farmers can maintain their fields without sacrificing their long-term physical health.

The successful execution of this nationwide modernization drive depends heavily on the active mobilization of knowledgeable agricultural extension officers, who will serve as the primary institutional bridge between the Ministry’s high-tech assets and the rural farming communities.

“The overarching goal is to engage our knowledgeable extension officers to empower farmers through technological advancement and vital input assistance, thereby boosting productivity and efficiency for more prosperous farming season(s)”

As the launch date draws near, the Minister for Food and Agriculture is positioning this campaign as a long-term model for sustainable sector development, combining immediate resource provisioning with forward-looking precision automation.

This approach is expected to fundamentally transform Ghana’s rural economy, making farming a more lucrative, efficient, and attractive venture for the youth, while securely cementing national food self-sufficiency under the administration’s broader developmental agenda.
