The youth of Atwima Mponua community in the Ashanti Region has stormed the street calling for the swift ratification of a mining lease agreement between the government and Ashanti Bauxite Limited. The ratification of this lease in Parliament is expected to facilitate the commencement of bauxite mining in the area, where mineral resource estimates have already been conducted.
Meanwhile, the community has issued a stern warning against any attempts to block the ratification, labeling such actions as a disservice to the public and detrimental to the community’s future. The strong sentiment expressed by the residents reflects the economic importance of the mining lease for their livelihoods.
The community’s optimism about the mining lease is grounded in the significant mineral resource estimates conducted in the region. A mineral resource estimate at Nyinahin, located within the Ashanti Region, indicates a minimum deposit of 375,000,000 metric tons of bauxite within hills 4, 5, and 6. These findings follow earlier estimates, which revealed that the first three hills in the region hold approximately 116,000,000 metric tons of bauxite.
The size of these deposits positions the region as a potential bauxite mining hub with the capacity to contribute significantly to the national economy and generate jobs for local communities. Despite the promising mineral resource estimates, the ratification of the lease agreement by Parliament’s Select Committee on Land and Forestry has faced delays. The delay has sparked concerns within the Atwima Mponua community, where many believe that time is of the essence. Meanwhile, Dr. Peter Chum, a resident of Nyinahin, expressed his frustration over the delays and urged the authorities to expedite the process.
“They should not hesitate in ratifying this agreement. Whoever will oppose the ratification of this agreement tomorrow is an enemy to progress. I will not forgive that person. History will never forgive that person.”

Dr. Chum’s sentiments reflect the wider community’s frustration with the delays, as they fear missing out on the economic opportunities that the bauxite mining project promises to bring.
Mining and Local Economy
The potential benefits of the bauxite mining project are not limited to the extraction of minerals. Nyinahin is primarily a farming community, with some residents also engaging in trading activities. However, the abundance of natural resources, including bauxite, gold, and forest resources, has also led to the rise of small-scale or illegal mining and logging in the area, as people struggle to make ends meet.

The former assembly member for Nyinahin, known as Mr. Baba Yaro, emphasized the importance of ratifying the mining lease agreement to create formal employment opportunities for the youth in the community. Mr. Baba Yaro argued that the economic prospects of the bauxite mining project could be transformative not only for Atwima Mponua but for the entire country.
“Now looking at our bauxite here, we can employ millions of youths in our country here to work at bauxite.’’ It has a lot of opportunities—bringing excavators, those who will be using the excavators, those who will be at the mining site—you will see that the economic viability will be very nice for the country.”

Mr. Baba Yaro further stressed the importance of youth employment to the country’s economy.
“The youth is the backbone of every economy. But when you don’t have a job for the youth, it means that your economy is going down. That is why we, the youth of Atwima Mponua, and Ashanti, as a whole in the country, wish that our leaders should have mercy on the youth.”

Youth Demand Ratification
The youth of Atwiwa Mponua, aware of the potential opportunities the mining lease could bring, have been vocal in their demands. On the eve of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Lands and Forestry’s session, they took to the streets of Minehin in protest, calling for the immediate ratification of the lease agreement. Their message was clear: the ratification of the lease would not only benefit the local community but also create job opportunities for people beyond the community.
“If the lease is ratified, it’s going to create more employment for the youth and also for the people in the community and also outside the community.”
A Resident of Atwima Mponua
The community’s march serves as a testament to their hope that the bauxite mining project will deliver tangible benefits to their lives, as many are struggling with unemployment and economic hardships. For them, the ratification of the lease agreement represents an opportunity to uplift the community’s economy and provide stable employment to its youth. Despite the community’s enthusiasm for the bauxite mining project, the path to ratification and eventual mining operations is not without its challenges.
The delay in the Parliamentary Select Committee’s ratification raises concerns about potential opposition to the lease, whether from environmental advocates, regulatory bodies, or other stakeholders. Additionally, while bauxite mining presents economic opportunities, it also poses potential risks, such as environmental degradation and the displacement of local communities. These concerns must be addressed by policymakers, who are tasked with balancing economic development with sustainable environmental practices and the rights of local communities.
The Atwima Mponua community’s fervent call for the ratification of the mining lease agreement with Ashanti Bauxite Limited reflects their belief in the transformative power of the project. With substantial bauxite deposits in the region and the promise of job creation, the community views the ratification as a crucial step toward economic development. However, the delays in the Parliamentary Select Committee’s ratification process have left the community anxious about the future of the project. As the debate over the lease agreement continues, the voices of Atwima Mponua’s residents serve as a reminder of the potential impact that bauxite mining could have on their livelihoods and the wider economy.
