During a recent visit to Savelugu in Ghana’s Northern Region, NDC Flagbearer John Dramani Mahama addressed residents with a series of promises aimed at transforming the community’s infrastructure, improving economic opportunities, and ensuring equitable access to social services.
Mahama highlighted various development projects and policies in line with the NDC’s broader national vision, promising Savelugu a better future under an NDC administration.
“We are going to come and work to make sure that Savelugu gets enough drinking water. So that our mothers and our sisters will not struggle to go and find clean drinking water.”

Mahama’s promise resonated with the audience, many of whom face daily struggles in sourcing water, especially during dry seasons.
Another highlight of Mahama’s visit was his plan to upgrade the Pong Tamale Veterinary College, to advance the educational needs of students in the Northern region.
“We want to attach it as a campus of the University of Development Studies, UDS… bring more students there, so that it becomes a first-class tertiary educational institution.”

Mahama emphasized his commitment to empowering women economically through the creation of the Women’s Development Bank and the modernization of the Savelugu market.
Additionally, Mahama plans to establish a branch of the Women’s Development Bank within the market to offer financial services to women traders.
“You go and keep it there. The day you want a loan, you go and ask for a loan. No collateral. You don’t have to put anything down before they give you the loan.’’

The NDC flagbearer also spoke of decentralizing recruitment for security services to ensure equal opportunity for youth across the country.
“We are not going to sit in Accra and recruit security officers. If you want to join police, customs, immigration, fire service, prison service, we’re going to come region by region.”

Moreover, Mahama reassured skilled vocational workers, such as carpenters, plumbers, and masons, that they would also have opportunities to join security services without requiring a senior high school certificate, provided they possess recognized vocational training certificates.
Expanding on his educational agenda, Mahama promised to relieve parents of the financial burden;
“So NDC, from next year when NDC comes, when you finish free SHS and you get your admission letter to the University, you won’t pay any academic fees at all.”

This initiative is part of the NDC’s commitment to equal educational opportunities, aiming to address the financial challenges that often prevent youth from pursuing tertiary education.
Farmer Support and Agricultural Initiatives
In recognition of the crucial role that agriculture plays in the local economy, Mahama announced plans to establish a Farmer Service Center in Savelugu.
The support is designed to enhance productivity and ease financial pressures on local farmers.
“We’re going to bring 15 tractors and harrows and plows… When you harvest your crops and you go and sell, you come and pay for the credit that you have been given.”

This initiative aligns with the NDC’s objective to boost agricultural productivity, improve food security, and support rural livelihoods.
“If you earn a monthly salary, you can choose to take a motorcycle or a small car. We’ll deduct it from your salary little by little until you finish paying for it.”

Furthermore, Mahama pledged to establish a housing scheme in collaboration with workers’ unions.
“If you want a one-bedroom house, a two-bedroom house, we’ll build it for you. By the time you retire in 20 years’ time, you finish paying for the house.”
