The opposition National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu has called on the ranks and file of the party to commit to unity to deliver victory for the party’s flagbearer, former President John Dramani Mahama in the December 7 polls.
The former Minority Leader delivering an address during the inauguration of the National Democratic Congress Canada Chapter leadership stressed the critical role unity and committed leadership would play in the party’s victory in the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
“If there is any time in our country’s history that the NDC must lead and lead the country, the time is now. We cannot afford it. I repeat it, we cannot afford to lose the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections…It’s to save our country from the decadence it is going through”

The seasoned politician further argued that the current state of the country’s economy, particularly the high national debt requires effective leadership from the ranks and file of the party to defeat the ruling New Patriotic Party in the 2024 general elections.
The Honorable Haruna Iddrisu drawing attention to what he deemed as the exponential increase in the country’s public debt since 2017, with figures now exceeding 600 billion cedis and citing a debt-to-GDP ratio of approximately 75% underscored the urgency of the situation.
Expressing a resolute determination to secure victory in the upcoming elections, the former Minority Leader stressed the need for the National Democratic Congress to rally together to salvage the country from what he described as its current state of “decadence”.
Calls to Address Internal Challenges
Furthermore, Honorable Haruna Iddrisu expressed the need for the leadership of the party at various levels to take immediate measures to address internal challenges within the party, particularly issues related to egos and personal agendas.
He underscored the need for forgiveness and reconciliation within the party ranks, urging members to set aside personal differences for the greater good of the country.
The Tamale South lawmaker urged members to prioritize the collective interests of the National Democratic Congress over individual ambitions, warning that disunity could provide the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) with an opportunity to extend its mandate in power.
“Whatever it is, we must be united and we should be united. So post elections, whether the elections were held at the branch level or held at the constituency level or at the choice of Member of Parliament, we need to forgive each other and let go for the good of our country to re-elect John Dramani Mahama as President of the Republic of Ghana”.

Commenting on former President John Dramani Mahama’s past experiences in public office, the former Minority Leader strongly asserted that the National Democratic Congress flagbearer possesses unique qualities that make him outshine the ruling New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer.
He expressed confidence in former President John Dramani Mahama’s candidacy and emphasized that the National Democratic Congress leader if given the opportunity to lead the country again would do better than he did as President and better than President Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party administration.
The National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for Tamale South in the Northern Region concluded his remarks by reiterating the imperative of unity for the party to defeat the ruling New Patriotic Party in the December 7 polls.
He emphasized that the motivation for the party to build cohesion to win the 2024 general elections should focus on a shared commitment to rectify what he perceived as the current misrule of the country by the ruling New Patriotic Party.
