Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has praised the residents of the Assin North Constituency in the Central Region and urged the rest of the nation to follow the NDC’s lead after their victory in the by-elections held on Tuesday.
“This is a signal that any wise people will learn from, any intelligent people will learn from, any humble people will learn from.”
Fifi Kwetey
The former MP for Ketu South claimed that Ghanaians as a whole, as well as the residents of Assin North in the Central Region, had suffered because of the injustice that the NPP had committed.
“What it is [Assin North constituents] have indicated is something the country as a whole must pay attention to. They have shown that they are the people who believe that justice must be done. They are people who believe you cannot impoverish a nation, you cannot render a people to become so full of suffering, dehumanising, reduce their dignity and then use a period of about a month to try hard to deceive them that you care.
“So what it is they have signalled is signal to the rest of the country that this type of governance, this type of of leadership is a leadership that must absolutely be thrown into dustbin of history, must be punished, must be humiliated and must be exposed. And I hope to God that the 30 million plus of Ghanaians are paying heed.”

Win By Gyakye Quayson Not Surprising
Ransford Gyampo, a professor at the University of Ghana, claimed that James Gyakye Quayson’s (NDC) victory in the recently concluded Assin North by-election was due to his increasing popularity as a result of the controversies he became involved in, sympathy votes, and the general economic hardships.
The win of Mr. Gyakye Quayson, according to Professor Gyampo, did not surprise him.
“His popularity inched up, he got sympathy votes and the general economic hardship also helped Gyakye Quayson. For me I wasn’t surprised. I was rather surprised at the broad display of arrogance by the ruling party.”
Prof Gyampo
Gyakye Quayson however claimed he believed in the rule of law and acts in accordance with the law moments before the Tuesday, June 27, by-election was declared in his favor. Additionally, he asserted that he had won back the allegiance of his constituents, the NDC fraternity, and NPP supporters.
“I was treated unfairly but as I said I had to abide by the court’s decision. If they didn’t believe in what I did, now they know the results. Again the good people of Assin North have demonstrated that they have a conscience and they believe in me.”
Gyakye Quayson
With 17,245 of the total number of valid votes cast for him, he was proclaimed the winner of the by-election. To win back the seat, he defeated Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) and Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Mr. Gyakye Quayson, whose election was ruled unlawful by the Supreme Court in 2020, will reappear to assume his place in Parliament.
