Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is on the brink of making Premier League history as he edges closer to matching the single-season assist record jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
The Portuguese playmaker delivered yet another contribution in United’s 2-1 victory over Brentford at Old Trafford, registering his 19th league assist of the campaign. Fernandes set up Benjamin Šeško for the Red Devils second goal after Casemiro had opened the scoring, before Brentford’s late response through Matthias Jensen proved to only be a consolation.
The result handed Manchester United a significant boost in their push for a UEFA Champions League spot, with four matches remaining in the season.
More importantly, it moved Fernandes within touching distance of one of the league’s most prestigious individual records.

With 19 assists to his name, Fernandes now needs just one more to equal the tally of 20 set by Henry during the 2002/03 season and later matched by De Bruyne in the 2019/20 campaign.
Both feats have long stood as benchmarks of creative excellence in English football. His consistency this season has made him the focal point of United’s attacking resurgence, underlining his importance not just as a captain, but as the team’s primary creator.
Chasing Greatness
The significance of Fernandes’ pursuit lies not only in the numbers but in the company he is set to join. Henry’s record-setting season with Arsenal redefined the role of a forward as a creator, while De Bruyne’s campaign with Manchester City showcased midfield dominance at the highest level.

Fernandes has combined both elements this season, operating as a creative hub while maintaining a direct impact on goals. His 27 goal involvements in the league place him among the most productive players in Europe, with only Erling Haaland surpassing him with 31 in the English Premier League.
What makes his achievement even more striking is the gap between him and his closest challengers. Rayan Cherki and Jarrod Bowen trail significantly behind with 10 assists each, leaving Fernandes in a commanding position to secure the Premier League Playmaker Award.
The award, given seasonally to the league’s top assist provider, now appears firmly within his grasp barring an unlikely collapse in the final stretch of the campaign.
United’s Revival and Leadership Influence
Fernandes’ performances have been central to United’s late-season surge particularly under Michael Carrick, turning what once looked like an inconsistent campaign into one with genuine promise.

His leadership has translated into output on the pitch, with teammates increasingly benefiting from his vision and precision. Benjamin Šeško was full of praise for his captain who set him up for his tenth goal in the premier League.
“Thank you, captain!. Bruno Fernandes and I work a lot in training and it is paying off. Knowing I have a team-mate with this quality is a pleasure and I have to use it.”

Interim head coach Michael Carrick also emphasized the importance of the result as the season approaches its decisive phase. “We got two fantastic results, now it’s results business time of the season,” the coach said. “To get the amount of wins we have, we’re delighted with that. It was all about the three points tonight. We’ve got a big game at the weekend.“
With four games left, Fernandes has the opportunity to equal the feat set by Henry and De Bruyne and can potentially surpass this mark to make history.
