National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has commemorated World LPG Day 2026, reaffirming its commitment to expanding access to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and strengthening safety standards across the country.

The event brought together policymakers, regulators, industry players and other stakeholders to highlight the role of LPG in Ghana’s energy transition and efforts to promote cleaner cooking solutions.

Discussions focused on improving public awareness, enhancing safety compliance and increasing accessibility to LPG as part of broader efforts to accelerate adoption across households and institutions.

Speaking at the event, Chief Executive of the NPA, Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, stressed that achieving widespread LPG adoption requires a coordinated and sustained effort from all stakeholders within the sector. According to him, effective regulation, public education and shared responsibility across the LPG value chain remain critical to expanding access and ensuring safe usage.

Expanding LPG Access

Mr. Tameklo noted that while progress has been made in promoting LPG consumption, continued collaboration between government agencies, industry operators and consumers will be necessary to sustain momentum and address existing challenges.

He emphasised that increasing LPG penetration requires not only investments in infrastructure but also sustained public education to encourage safe handling and usage practices.

According to the NPA Chief Executive, strengthening stakeholder engagement across the sector will be key to ensuring that LPG remains accessible, affordable and safe for consumers nationwide.

Government Backs Clean Cooking Initiatives

Delivering the keynote address, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, reiterated government’s commitment to increasing local LPG production and supporting initiatives aimed at expanding access to clean cooking fuels.

The Minister highlighted ongoing efforts to promote LPG usage in educational institutions, particularly secondary schools, through interventions supported by the Renewable Energy Fund.

He noted that expanding access to cleaner energy sources forms part of broader national efforts to improve public health outcomes, reduce dependence on traditional biomass fuels and support environmental sustainability.

The move, he indicated, aligns with government’s objective of accelerating the transition towards cleaner and more efficient energy solutions for households and institutions.

Industry Calls for Greater Collaboration

Stakeholders at the event also underscored the need for stronger collaboration to address barriers that continue to affect LPG penetration across the country.

Industry players identified affordability constraints, investment requirements, limited public awareness and regulatory challenges as some of the key issues requiring attention to accelerate adoption.

They stressed that overcoming these obstacles will require coordinated policy interventions and sustained engagement between regulators, investors and consumers.

Participants further highlighted the importance of creating an enabling environment that encourages private sector investment while ensuring safety and consumer protection remain priorities.

Advancing Safety, Energy Transition

Director of Gas at the NPA, Ntiwaa Kwakye, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to coordinating stakeholder efforts and promoting safety across the LPG sector.

She noted that public education and safety advocacy remain central to the Authority’s strategy for encouraging responsible LPG use and building public confidence in the product.

According to her, strengthening collaboration among stakeholders will be essential to advancing Ghana’s clean energy transition and achieving national targets for increased LPG adoption through a unified national LPG agenda.

She further emphasised the need for continued engagement with consumers and industry players to promote best practices and strengthen safety culture across the sector.

Supporting Sustainable Energy Goals

The commemoration of World LPG Day provided an opportunity for stakeholders to assess progress made within the sector while identifying areas requiring further attention.

As Ghana continues to pursue cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions, LPG is expected to remain an important component of the country’s energy mix, particularly in efforts to promote clean cooking and reduce reliance on traditional fuels.

The discussions at the event reflected a growing recognition of the role LPG can play in supporting energy access, environmental sustainability and improved quality of life for households across the country.

With government, regulators and industry players signalling continued commitment to expanding LPG adoption, stakeholders remain optimistic that greater collaboration and investment can help accelerate Ghana’s transition towards cleaner and safer energy use.
