Award-winning Ghanaian actor, Prince David Osei has asked the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, and his government to find other means of recuperating monies lost on freebies during the lockdown period.
This follows the Information indicating that Ghanaians will have to pay for the free provision of water and electricity. This was introduced by the government in 2020 as part of measures to curb the spread of COVID-19.
Prince David Osei who campaigned for the NPP to win the elections in 2020 was clearly displeased about the development. Reacting to the news on his Instagram page, he stated that Akufo-Addo’s u-turn on the free electricity and water makes those who campaigned for him based on that to look “mindless.”
“If we campaigned for #4morefornana to do more on the premise of free water and electricity during the pandemic. We turn around to tax the people, then it makes some of us who championed the course look mindless”.
Nonetheless, he urged the President to find another way to recover the monies lost.
“Pls, Mr. President I believe in you! There can be another way of recuperating the money lost. Other than citizens paying for the free usage of water and electricity you affectionately offered to them… Thank You @nakufoaddo”
COMMENTS FROM HIS POST PRINCE
His post attracted several comments from netizens who sighted his post. Some said that the issue of taxes is totally different from free water and electricity. Therefore he shouldn’t complain. However, Prince Osei in a quick defense also stated that the President could have just increased the taxes without mentioning that citizens will pay a 1% Levy on VAT. Which will help recuperate the 19billion Ghana cedis spent on COVID related issues. Which includes the relief package on the utilities. That notwithstanding, some agreed with him and thanked him for being an honest person. Some comments from his post read:
NANA ADDO’S GOVERNMENT FREEBIES
It can be recalled that last year during the Covid-19 lockdown in April, President Nana Akufo-Addo stated in his sixth address to the nation that the government will fully cover the bills of low-income consumers of electricity and water in the country for April, May, and June 2020. Again, in his 21st address to the nation, His Excellency Akufo-Addo announced an extension of the relief on electricity and water.
