We have all heard of stories of people falling in love in the most unconventional way and having out-of-the-box weddings. But a woman hailing from Gujarat, India has done something that is definitely not heard about, at least in India.
In an extreme manifestation of self-love, 24-year-old, Kshama Bindu, is all set for her wedding on June 11 without a groom. She’s getting married to herself, and apparently, this wedding is being dubbed as ‘India’s first sologamy or solo wedding’, according to reports.
The wedding will be a traditional Hindu marriage, wherein Kshama will tie the knot with herself and say her wedding vows. Kshama has reportedly penned down five vows for the wedding which will be solemnized at a temple in Gotri. After the wedding, she is also planning to have a 2-week honeymoon with herself.
Kshama said that this unique idea to marry herself was aimed at highlighting the fact that “women matter”.
According to reports, Kshama said speaking about her marriage said: “I never wanted to get married. But I did want to become a bride. So, I decided to marry myself. I looked up to see if there has been any such marriage in India, but couldn’t find any. Maybe I am the first one to do so. Self-marriage is a commitment to be there for yourself and unconditional love for oneself. It’s also an act of self-acceptance. People marry someone they love. I love myself and hence, this wedding”.
When asked about her parents’ reaction, she said that her parents are open-minded and accepting of her wedding.
Speculations of Kshama’s Sologamy Failing
Some people have argued that Kshama’s decision to marry solo would not last as there will come a time when she will crave companionship. According to them, she will change her mind someday over her “bizarre decision” as has been the case with most sologamists.
It can be recalled that a woman who had married herself in 2021, divorced herself after she met someone else. Cris Galera was tired of relying on men and decided to marry herself in September 2021. The 31-year-old model was embracing being alone and was not disappointed to not have a groom. However, it seemed that she had had enough after being a wife to herself in just 90 days.
Cris, who hails from Sao Paulo in Brazil, said that she started falling in love after “meeting someone special.”
“I was happy while my marriage to myself lasted,” Cris said while talking about the divorce.
Per research conducted, for an increasing number of people, primarily women, the ultimate expression of self-love is to marry themselves.
It is worth noting that sologamy isn’t legally binding like a conventional marriage, but there are no laws against it anywhere in the world, according to the research.
Sologamy has reportedly been around since the early 1990s when an American woman, Linda Barker, married herself in front of seven bridesmaids and 75 guests.
