Mr. Daniel Amartey, the Deputy Director of Elections for the biggest opposition party in Ghana, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has disclosed that the party is fully prepared for its National Delegates’ Congress scheduled for Saturday December 17, at the Accra Sports Stadium in the Greater Accra Region.
Mr. Amartey noted that the ballot papers for the elections are ready and have been handed over to the Electoral Commission of Ghana.
Speaking in an interview, the Deputy Director indicated that about 61 aspirants are contesting for various positions in the party.
“This number does not include the 18 that contested in the youth and women conference held at the University of Cape Coast in the Central Region last Saturday December 10, 2022”

According to him, the delegates who voted at the Cape Coast conference will also be voting in the Accra congress. He revealed that a little over 9,000 delegates are expected to gather at the Accra Sports stadium to elect national officers to control the affairs of the party leading into the 2024 general elections.
Mr. Amartey disclosed that the party has established two congress villages at Legon and Tutu areas, to receive delegates who will be leaving from other parts of the country for Accra today. The Deputy Director again stated that the National Democratic Congress is prepared for the upcoming congress, adding that the security agencies have assured the party of maximum security.

Mr Amartey noted that the police have explained that, from its experience with the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) delegates conference, it has come out with some new measures to deal with any eventuality at the grounds.
SATURDAY’S ELECTIONS
The party, on Wednesday December 7, released the list of candidates contesting for various national executive positions in the run-up to its congress on Saturday.
The candidates who will be elected on Saturday at the Accra Sports Stadium will lead the National Democratic Congress into the 2024 polls.
The avidly contested position is the national chairmanship position, which will be between the current National Chairman, Mr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, the incumbent General Secretary, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, Nii Armah Ashitey, a former Member of Parliament and Samuel Yaw Adusei.
The Former Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Dr. Sherry Ayittey, who is contesting for the Vice Chairman position, will be competing seven other candidates. They include Evelyn Enyonam Mensah, Amadu Sorogho, Awudu Sofo Azourka, seth Ofori, Abanga Yakubu and Alhaji Habibu.
The current National Communications Officer of the party, Mr. Sammy Gyamfi is going unopposed. Mr Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey and Peter Boamah Otokunor are also Competing for General Secretary Position.
