Ghana Economist Breaks Global Research Ranking Barriers

Professor Joshua Yindenaba Abor of the University of Ghana Business School

Ghana’s academic community is celebrating a major international milestone after Professor Joshua Yindenaba Abor of the University of Ghana Business School secured the top position in Economics and Finance in Ghana in the 2026 Research.com Best Scientist Rankings.

The recognition places him among the most influential scholars in his field globally and further elevates Ghana’s reputation in academic research.

Professor Abor, a distinguished academic at the Department of Finance and former Dean of the University of Ghana Business School, emerged as the leading scientist in Economics and Finance in Ghana while also earning an impressive global ranking of 1,627th among more than 3,800 scientist profiles assessed worldwide.

The recognition has sparked excitement across the academic and financial sectors, with many describing it as a defining moment for higher education and research in Ghana.

A Landmark Achievement for Ghana

Professor Abor’s latest accomplishment is not just a personal milestone. It also represents a significant achievement for Ghana’s academic landscape. Being ranked number one in the country in a globally competitive field such as Economics and Finance demonstrates the growing influence of Ghanaian scholars in shaping economic thought, policy research, and financial studies.

The ranking by Research.com, one of the world’s recognized platforms for evaluating scientific excellence, highlights scholars whose work has made measurable contributions to their respective disciplines through impactful research and consistent academic output.

For Ghana, having one of its scholars recognized on such a prestigious platform sends a strong signal about the quality of research emerging from its universities.

The Numbers Behind the Recognition

What makes Professor Abor’s ranking even more remarkable are the academic metrics behind his success. According to the published rankings, he has accumulated an impressive 13,272 citations across 212 academic publications.

These figures reflect years of consistent scholarly contributions and a research portfolio that has influenced students, policymakers, researchers, and financial professionals across different parts of the world.

Citations remain one of the strongest indicators of academic impact because they show how often other researchers reference a scholar’s work in their own studies. Professor Abor’s citation count therefore reflects not only productivity but also relevance and influence within the global academic community.

Winning the 2026 Leader Award

In addition to topping the national rankings, Professor Abor also received the 2026 Research.com Economics and Finance Leader Award in Ghana.

This honour recognizes scholars who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to advancing knowledge within their discipline. The award further strengthens his status as one of Ghana’s leading voices in finance and economic research.

For many young academics and postgraduate students, his achievement serves as a source of inspiration and proof that global excellence can be achieved from African institutions.

Understanding the Research.com Ranking System

The Research.com Best Scientist Ranking is based on what is known as the D Index, also referred to as the Discipline H Index. This metric evaluates a researcher’s academic output and citation impact strictly within their field of specialization.

Unlike general academic rankings, the D Index focuses on subject-specific influence, ensuring that scholars are measured according to their direct contributions to their chosen discipline.

To qualify for inclusion, researchers must achieve a minimum D Index score of 30. This makes entry into the rankings highly competitive and reserved for scholars who have consistently demonstrated sustained research excellence over time.

Only researchers ranked within the top one percent globally in their disciplines are included, making Professor Abor’s recognition even more prestigious.

Boost for University of Ghana Business School

The University of Ghana Business School has described Professor Abor’s achievement as a remarkable milestone for the institution.

The school noted that the recognition reflects the increasing global visibility of research produced by its faculty and highlights its commitment to generating knowledge that contributes to policy development, business innovation, and economic transformation.

Over the years, UGBS has positioned itself as one of Africa’s leading business schools, producing graduates and research that influence both public and private sector decision-making.

Professor Abor’s international recognition adds another layer of prestige to the institution and reinforces its role as a center of academic excellence.

A Symbol of Ghana’s Growing Academic Influence

Professor Abor’s success also points to a larger trend of increasing African representation in global research rankings. As universities across the continent invest more in research, faculty development, and international collaborations, African scholars are beginning to command greater recognition on the global stage.

For Ghana specifically, this achievement demonstrates that local institutions can produce world-class research capable of influencing international academic and policy conversations.

It also highlights the importance of supporting research ecosystems, academic funding, and scholarly mentorship to ensure that future generations can build on these successes.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Beyond rankings and awards, Professor Abor’s journey represents the power of dedication, consistency, and intellectual leadership.

For students pursuing careers in economics, finance, and academia, his story sends a clear message that excellence is achievable through rigorous scholarship and a commitment to advancing knowledge.

As Ghana continues to position itself as a hub for education and innovation in Africa, achievements like this provide a powerful foundation for future academic breakthroughs.
