The National Youth Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, George Opare Addo Esq. has condemned the Ghana Police Service for disrupting the peaceful protest of the Occupy Jubilee House protestors.
Mr. Opare Addo also accused the Ghana Police Service of deliberately using unconstitutional means to arrest the protestors of the Occupy Jubilee House Protest.
“There’s no justification, absolutely none to warrant the actions of the Ghana Police this morning! We are not in a police state. The constitution guarantees the rights of citizens to protest, and using communist inferior tactics roped with legal manoeuvring is ridiculously self-serving”.
George Opare Addo Esq.
He further emphasized that under constitutional governance, citizens must always have the freedom to register their displeasure with how the country is being governed.
The National Youth Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress also argued that public protests are recognized democratic instruments used by citizens to vent and voice out their concerns.
He therefore called on the Ghana Police Service to immediately release the freedom fighters in their custody and accused President Akuffo Addo and the New Patriotic Party administration of destroying Ghana’s democracy.
“This country is on a downward trajectory; the economy is a mess, taxes are killing young people and you want to frustrate us further by denying us our democratic rights! Mr. President, this is not democracy! Ghana Police Service, you’re agents of the people and not politicians! Stop the tyranny!!!”.
George Opare Addo Esq.
Mr. Opare Addo also called on all the freedom fighters and protestors to remain firm and keep their voice loud and clear and has assured them that the National Democratic Congress would stand with all the protestors of the Occupy Jubilee House demonstration and would ensure justice is served to all those who have been arrested.
Police Arrest Protestors of Occupy Jubilee House Protest
The Ghana Police Service has arrested protestors who participated in the #OccupyJulorBiHouse demonstration this morning within the vicinity of the Jubilee House.
The lead Convenor for the protest, Oliver Barker Vormawor shared a video on social media showing the protestors in black and red seated in the company of some police officers on a bus.
Mr. Vormawor expressed his deepest disappointment at the actions of the Ghana police service. He stated that the country had weaponised the police to suppress demonstrators adding that the police have no right to arrest demonstrators in the country.
“This is not the democracy we signed up for. This is not a democracy.”
Oliver Barker Vormawor
Mr. Vormawor called on legal practitioners to show up at the police headquarters to provide legal assistance to the arrested demonstrators.
Meanwhile, private legal practitioner and seasoned journalist, Samson Lardy Anyenini has described the action of the Ghana Police as unconstitutional, unlawful and unacceptable.
Democracy Hub, an Accra-based civil society organization, had previously informed the Ghana Police Service of their planned demonstration on Nkrumah Memorial Day to demand the President and members of the Economic Management Team to “#FixTheCountry” in light of the level of economic mismanagement and theft that has engulfed the government from the highest levels.
