In the Ghanaian film industry, ageism is a prevalent issue that affects actors and actresses, especially when it comes to casting for roles in movies.
Many talented and experienced actors have been rejected for roles simply because they are considered too old for the characters they are auditioning for.
This discriminatory practice not only limits opportunities for older actors but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes about aging.
Veteran Ghanaian actor, Fred Amugi has revealed that he’s been facing discrimination and has been rejected for movie roles because of his age.
Despite his enormous contribution to Ghana’s movie industry, Mr Amugi, 75, stated he’s not had it rosy with producers because of his old age.
“I was once rejected because people thought I was too old. But they forgot that a family needs both children and older people to be complete. What we see on TV and in movies shows us how people live together. And in every community, people of all ages work together. So, I’m still active, still acting and still doing well.”

Similarly, actress Grace Omaboe, also known as Maame Dokono, faced ageism in the industry. Despite her impressive body of work and acting skills, she has been passed over for roles because of her age.
This is a disheartening reality for many older actors who still have a lot to offer but are sidelined because of their age.
The issue of ageism in Ghanaian cinema is not just limited to veteran actors. Even younger actors have faced discrimination based on their age.
Many aspiring actors have been told that they are too old to play certain roles, even though they are well within the age range of the character they are auditioning for.
This narrow-minded approach to casting not only limits the diversity of talent in the industry but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes about what actors should look like.
The Ghanaian film industry must address and challenge ageism in casting decisions. By valuing talent and experience over age, filmmakers create more inclusive and diverse stories that reflect the richness of Ghanaian society.
Older actors should be allowed to showcase their skills and continue to contribute to the industry, rather than being sidelined because of their age. Ultimately, breaking down ageist barriers in casting will benefit both actors and audiences, leading to more authentic and compelling storytelling in Ghanaian cinema.
Acting, a Demanding Profession
Acting is a competitive and demanding profession, and Ghanaian actors must continuously strive to improve themselves to stand out in the industry.
Humility and discipline are indeed important qualities for actors.
Acting requires a certain level of vulnerability and the ability to connect with different characters and emotions.
Humility allows actors to approach their work with an open mind, to be receptive to feedback and direction, and to collaborate effectively with others.
It also helps actors to stay grounded, maintain a sense of self-awareness, and avoid letting their ego hinder their growth as performers.
Acting is a demanding profession that requires consistent effort, focus, and dedication.
Actors need to be disciplined in several aspects of their craft, including studying scripts, researching characters, rehearsing, and maintaining physical and vocal fitness.
Discipline helps actors stay committed to their craft even when faced with challenges or setbacks, and it allows them to continually improve their skills.
Fred Amugi talked about what’s most important for actors and how they could improve themselves in their careers.
“When it comes to acting, I think the most important qualities are humility and discipline. These traits come from experiencing different aspects of life. We can learn from what happens around us and what brings good and bad things.
“By seeing how others have lived, we can learn to be humble and disciplined. Those who are, tend to have the best lives. Humility and discipline are key.”

In addition to humility and discipline, other qualities that are often considered important for actors include creativity, adaptability, perseverance, empathy, and the ability to take risks. These qualities, along with a strong work ethic, contribute to a successful acting career.
